A BFT gate motor replacement in Jacksonville typically runs $650 to $1,450 installed, depending on your model and whether we’re swapping the motor assembly or the full operator. We stock the most common BFT motor assemblies on our trucks, so most replacements happen in a single visit. If your gate groans, stalls mid-cycle, or won’t respond unless you push it, the motor is usually the culprit, not the control board or remote.

In Jacksonville, BFT motors face a specific enemy: heat and humidity. We replace more stators and capacitors here than in drier climates because moisture works its way into the motor housing over years of afternoon thunderstorms and 90-degree days. The good news is that BFT designed these motors to be serviceable. The bad news is that when the armature windings finally short out, no capacitor swap will save it.
Lonnie Burke keeps a short list on every job: identify the exact BFT series, match the motor’s voltage and torque rating, swap the part, then cycle the gate three times before closing the ticket. If it doesn’t cycle clean three times, we’re not done.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT builds gate operators under several series names, and the motor inside is not interchangeable across all of them. In Jacksonville, we most often replace motors on the Deimos BT, Phobos, and Icaro swing-arm operators, plus the Rigel and Sub sliding-gate lines. If you’re not sure which one you have, check the metal rating plate on the side of the operator housing. The model code and voltage are stamped there, usually on a silver or white label.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners hit: a 230V BFT motor will not run on a 115V board, even if the physical bolt pattern is identical. We’ve seen Jacksonville homeowners order a used motor online, bolt it in, and burn up the new board within a week. That’s an expensive mistake. Always match voltage first, then the gear ratio stamped on the motor’s end cap.
One more thing: BFT changed motor connector styles around 2016 on the Deimos line. Pre-2016 units use a screw-terminal connection. Newer production uses a sealed Amp connector. They’re not cross-compatible without splicing, which we don’t do on repairs. When we quote your replacement, we confirm the connector style from your production date before we ever load the truck.
We’re an independent gate repair company, not a BFT dealer or affiliate. That means we can tell you honestly when a quality aftermarket motor will do the job and when you should stick with the genuine BFT part. For swing operators, we lean OEM because the thermal cutoff values are matched to BFT’s controller logic. For slide operators, a few proven aftermarket motors with higher IP ratings actually hold up better in Jacksonville’s wet summer months, and we stock both.

Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
- Gate starts, then stops halfway through the cycle. The motor’s thermal overload is tripping because the windings are overheating. It’ll reset after it cools, cycle once, then trip again. Each trip shortens its remaining life.
- Humming at the operator but no gate movement. The start capacitor is failing or the motor’s internal shaft bearing has seized. If the gate moves freely when released, the problem is inside the motor, not the gate hardware.
- Slow, labored movement in both directions. BFT motors lose torque as their permanent-magnet rotor degrades. When it can barely meet the force setting on the board, replacement is days or weeks away, not months.
- Burning or electrical smell after a storm cycle. Water intrusion has reached the windings. In Jacksonville, this usually follows a tropical system or days of driving rain. Once windings arc, the motor is done.
- Gate reverses for no reason. The motor’s current draw is spiking erratically, so the control board reads it as an obstruction. The board isn’t the problem. The motor’s inconsistent resistance is.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For Jacksonville BFT swing operators, expect $650 to $950 for a motor assembly replacement on common Deimos BT and Phobos models. Sliding gate motors on Rigel and Sub units run higher, $850 to $1,450, because the work includes aligning the rack and resetting the limit switches. The range comes down to two things: whether we’re replacing just the motor or the motor with the reduction gearbox, and whether your operator is 115V or 230V.
Every quote we give is written, itemized, and agreed to before we open a tool bag. You’ll see the part number, the labor line, and the total. If we find something unexpected mid-job, we stop and call you with the new number before doing anything else. No surprise invoices.
Your replacement carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the motor fails within a year of service, we return and make it right at no charge, including the second visit.
DIY or Call Us?
Let’s be straight: this is not a capacitor swap. A BFT gate motor sits inside a steel operator housing, wired to a control board carrying 115V or 230V. If you’re not confident with a multimeter and comfortable working around live line voltage, this is a job for a trained tech. One crossed wire burns the board, and now you’re replacing a $300 motor plus a $400 controller instead of just paying for the motor swap.
What you can safely check before calling: confirm the breaker is on, check the operator display for an error code, and release the manual override to see whether the gate itself moves freely. That last test tells us a lot. If the gate is stiff to push, you may have a hinge or wheel problem making the motor work too hard, and we want to know that before we quote the motor.
If the gate moves freely by hand but fails under power, the motor is your problem. Call (904) 490-8559 and we’ll get eyes on it, usually same day.
FAQs
In Jacksonville’s climate, a BFT gate motor typically lasts 8 to 12 years with regular use. Motors on gates that cycle more than 20 times a day, like small HOA entrances or commercial driveways, may last 5 to 7 years. The Florida heat and humidity shorten life compared to inland or northern climates, mainly through insulation breakdown and moisture intrusion around the housing seals.
Sometimes the capacitor, the limit switch, or a corroded terminal can be repaired and the motor lives on. But when the windings short, the bearings seize, or the rotor loses magnetism, rebuilding costs more in labor than a new motor assembly. We’ll tell you which category yours falls into before quoting anything. Call (904) 490-8559 for a straight answer on your specific operator.
Most BFT motor swaps take 90 minutes to 2.5 hours on site. Slide operators take longer because the rack alignment and limit reset are part of the job. If we have your motor on the truck, you’ll have a working gate same day.
We stock motor assemblies for the most common BFT models in Jacksonville: Deimos BT, Phobos, and Rigel in both 115V and 230V. Less common variants may need a 2 to 4 day order, and we’ll tell you that on the phone before we schedule the truck, not after we arrive. We also handle LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls, so if your operator turns out to be a different brand than you thought, we’re still equipped.
