We stock and install BFT-compatible weldments and fabricated gate components in Jacksonville, with most bracket, hinge, and mount repairs running $240 – $580 installed. Same-day service is available when we have the part on the truck, which covers roughly 80% of BFT hinge and bracket failures we see. Most Jacksonville owners discover the problem the same way: the gate starts dragging, binding at one corner, or the opener strains against a mount that’s quietly tearing itself apart.

Welding and fabrication on a BFT system almost always comes down to the steel that carries the load. The motor is rarely the first thing to fail. The bracket it’s bolted to? That’s a different story, especially in Jacksonville’s salt air and summer humidity. We’ll walk through what fails, what it costs, and how to know whether you’re calling us or reaching for a wrench.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT swing gate systems – the Deimos, Phobos, and Rigel series in particular – share a common weak point: the articulating arm mount and the upper hinge bracket. The motor itself mounts to a fabricated steel plate or post bracket, and after years of cycle stress, that plate can crack at the weld or pull away from the post. We also see this on BFT slide gate models like the Lux and Max series, where the rack mount and idler plate take a beating from Florida’s sandy soil and shifting concrete pads.
Identifying the right part means checking two things. First, the motor’s data plate: BFT stamps the model number on the underside of the operator housing. Second, the bracket itself: measure the bolt hole spacing center-to-center and the plate thickness with a caliper or a coin – a quarter is about 1.75mm, and most BFT residential brackets run 4 – 6mm plate. OEM BFT replacement brackets are fine parts but they’re pricey for what they are. A quality aftermarket bracket, cut and welded locally to the same spec, runs 30 – 50% less and uses the same mounting geometry. The catch: aftermarket work is only as good as the welder. A bad weld on a gate bracket fails fast, and in Jacksonville’s humidity, an uncoated weld starts rusting within weeks.
We run powder-coated or cold-galvanized aftermarket brackets for BFT systems because they outlast raw steel in this climate. If your existing bracket is still serviceable, we’ll weld-reinforce it in place rather than sell you a part you don’t need.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- Gate sags at the free end. The top hinge bracket is elongating at the bolt holes or the hinge post is flexing. The BFT motor keeps pushing, but the gate’s weight is now levering against the bracket, not pivoting on it.
- Opener strains or buzzes on start. The articulating arm’s mounting plate has shifted, throwing the arm’s geometry out of spec. BFT arms are designed to move in one plane; a tilted mount makes the motor work against its own linkage.
- Visible crack at a weld or plate edge. This is the one that gets caught too late. Cracks start at the heat-affected zone along the weld line and propagate outward. If you can see it, it’s already spreading.
- Loose anchor bolts that won’t stay tight. The post or pad has deteriorated around the anchors, and the bracket is working loose every few weeks. Re-tightening is temporary; the substrate is gone and the mount needs re-engineering.
- Gate jerks mid-travel. A cracked bracket flexes under torque, causing the gate to bind partway through the cycle and then jump free. This is the one Lonnie Burke tells homeowners to take seriously: the load is no longer controlled, and the next failure point is usually the arm itself or the motor’s gearbox.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Jacksonville, you’re looking at these numbers for BFT welding and fabrication work, installed:
- Bracket repair / weld reinforcement (in place): $240 – $380
- Single hinge or arm bracket replacement (aftermarket, fabricated to spec): $280 – $450
- Full hinge assembly rebuild (both hinges, new pins, welded plates): $450 – $700
- Slide gate rack mount / idler plate overhaul: $380 – $580
The spread comes down to access, post condition, and whether we’re reinforcing what’s there or cutting out and replacing steel. Every price is written before work starts – no discovery charges, no “while we’re in there” add-ons. The written quote includes all labor, materials, welding consumables, and anti-corrosion coating. The work carries our written guarantee for a full year.
We’re an independent Jacksonville gate repair company, not affiliated with BFT. We stock BFT-compatible parts and fabricate what we don’t carry, alongside parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems.

What you can safely do: inspect the bracket visually, check for cracked welds or loose anchors, and take photos with measurements before you call. That helps us give you a real price over the phone rather than a vague range.
What you shouldn’t do: weld a loaded gate bracket yourself. The gate is under tension from its own weight plus the motor’s hold force, and a bracket that gives way mid-repair drops that load on whoever’s under it. Mig welding a bracket while it’s still bolted to a live gate is how people get hurt. There’s also the matter of the BFT motor’s limit settings: after any bracket repair, the arm geometry shifts and limits need to be re-tuned, or the gate overdrives and tears up the new steel. Trained people, proper equipment, and the gate pinned and braced before any cutting starts – that’s how we do it. If you’re not set up for that, call (904) 490-8559 and we’ll come out, assess it, and hand you a written price before anything gets cut.
If the gate doesn’t cycle right, the job isn’t done.
FAQs
In Jacksonville’s coastal climate, a quality BFT bracket with good coating typically lasts 8 – 12 years before weld fatigue or corrosion becomes a problem. Uncoated or poorly welded aftermarket parts can fail in 3 – 5. The salt air a few miles from the coast is the variable that eats cheap steel the fastest; inland Mandarin and Southside properties typically get the longer end of that range, while anything east of the Intracoastal runs shorter.
Yes, when the crack is caught early and the surrounding steel is solid. We grind out the crack, weld it, and reinforce with a gusset plate where the original design left a stress riser. If the crack extends through 50% or more of the bracket’s cross-section, or if bolt holes are elongated beyond spec, replacement is cheaper long-term than a repair that buys another 18 months. Call (904) 490-8559 and we’ll tell you which way your bracket is trending.
Most bracket reinforcements and single-bracket replacements are done in 2 – 3 hours on site. A full hinge assembly rebuild with new fabricated plates runs 4 – 6 hours including limit re-tuning and cycle testing. We don’t close out the ticket until the gate cycles clean three times in a row – that’s the standard, not a suggestion.
We stock the common BFT articulating arm mounts, hinge bracket blanks, and rack-mount plates for Deimos, Phobos, Rigel, Lux, and Max series. If your model needs something we don’t have loaded, we fabricate it in our Jacksonville shop and typically install it same-day or next morning. When you call, have your BFT model number ready and we’ll tell you exactly what’s on the vehicle heading your way.
