BFT access control installation in Jacksonville typically runs between $550 and $1,450 installed, depending on whether you’re adding a keypad, card reader, or full intercom system to an existing BFT gate operator. Most jobs are completed in under three hours once we’re on site.

We’re Carver Gate Repair Jacksonville, an independent gate service company. We’re not affiliated with BFT, but we install, wire, and program their access control components every week. If your keypad stopped accepting codes after a storm, your card reader quit recognizing remotes, or your intercom lets callers hear you but won’t open the gate, this page tells you what went wrong, what it costs to fix, and how the job gets done right the first time.
Here’s the part most Jacksonville owners don’t realize: your access control problem is rarely the control board. It’s almost always water intrusion at the keypad seal, a damaged ribbon cable inside the reader housing, or a surge that cooked the relay. Lonnie Burke and our crew have been seeing these exact failures across Mandarin, Riverside, and the Southside for years. We stock the parts on the truck so we’re not guessing at the supply house while your gate stays stuck.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT access control components work across their Deimos, Phobos, and Thalia series gate operators, along with the older Rigel and Icaro lineups. The catch is this: BFT changed their keypad and reader connector type around 2017. If your operator was installed before that, the newer wireless keypads won’t communicate without a receiver module. We carry both vintage and current components, and Lonnie checks the board revision number on site before anything gets wired in.
Identify what you have by opening the operator housing and looking for the small white label on the control board. The model number starts with “D” (Deimos), “P” (Phobos), or “T” (Thalia). The keypad, reader, and intercom module each have their own compatibility code printed on the back of the unit. Send us a photo or read us that label on the phone and we’ll tell you what’s needed before we ever roll a truck.
For OEM parts, BFT’s current generation keypads and readers are solid hardware. We also carry aftermarket equivalents that are IP-rated and use the same wiring diagram. The aftermarket option saves you 20 to 30 percent on the component. The decision comes down to how long you plan to keep the property. Investment properties and remote management setups do better with OEM. Residential homeowners who plan to stay five-plus years are fine either way.

Signs Your BFT Access Control Installation Is Failing
- Intermittent code rejection. The keypad works fine in the morning but rejects the same code by afternoon, or requires two or three attempts. This is almost always a failing membrane switch under the keypad buttons, not a programming problem. Silicone membrane switches in Jacksonville’s humidity have an honest five to seven year lifespan.
- Card reader flashes but won’t open. The reader powers up, the LED responds, but the gate doesn’t move. The relay has stopped closing at the control board. It’s a component issue, and it’s a same-day swap once diagnosed.
- Intercom static or one-way audio. You can hear the person at the gate but they can’t hear you, or vice versa. The microphone or speaker element inside the call station has corroded. This is the most common access control failure we see near the beaches and the St. Johns River, where salt air settles on every exposed contact.
- Keypad takes on water. Open the cover and look for condensation, rust streaks, or water staining inside the housing. The seal has failed. This is a replacement situation, not a repair, because once moisture reaches the circuit board the buttons start shorting in unpredictable ways. It can also backfeed voltage into the operator control board and cause a much bigger repair if ignored.
- System works only when it’s cool or dry. In peak heat, the access control goes dead, then works again after sunset. Thermal expansion is opening a hairline crack in the housing or the internal antenna connection is failing at a solder point from repeated heat cycling. Jacksonville’s summers kill circuit boards this way. We see it every August.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Installed BFT access control pricing in Jacksonville breaks down like this:

- Standalone keypad replacement: $250 to $430 installed, including component and programming.
- Card reader or fob reader install: $380 to $625 installed, depending on wiring runs and whether it’s a new add-on or replacing an existing unit.
- Intercom call station: $475 to $720 installed, including audio calibration.
- Full access control package (keypad, reader, and intercom wiring): $700 to $1,450 installed.
The range depends on distance between the gate and the panel, whether we’re adding a new cable through conduit or reusing existing wiring, and whether the old component damaged the control board’s relay input. Every quote includes the component, wiring work, programming and testing, and our full-year written guarantee on the labor. You get a written price before we start. The number doesn’t move. That’s The Garrison Standard, and it’s been the rule at every Carver Gate location since 2008.
DIY or Call Us?
There is a safe middle ground here. You can check whether the issue is the breaker, whether the keypad face is cracked or showing water inside, and whether the wire terminals at the back of the keypad are loose. These are visual checks. Turn the system off at the breaker first if you’re opening any housing.
Where DIY goes wrong is wiring a new keypad or reader without checking the board revision, crossing the data lines, or working on the operator with it still energized. BFT boards run 24V for the access control circuit, which won’t knock you across the yard, but it can cook a two-hundred-dollar board with one crossed wire. If the gate motor still moves but the access control isn’t responding, call us at (904) 490-8559. We diagnose it, quote it in writing, and finish the same day in most cases. If the gate doesn’t cycle right, the job isn’t done.
FAQs
A BFT keypad lasts five to seven years in Jacksonville before the membrane switch degrades from heat and humidity. Units mounted in direct sun or within two miles of salt water often fail at the lower end of that range. We recommend replacing at the first sign of intermittent code rejection rather than waiting for total failure. Call (904) 490-8559 for an exact quote on your specific model, estimates are free.
Keypads with failed membranes and readers with water intrusion are not economically repairable. The labor to desolder and replace a membrane switch exceeds the cost of a new component. We only recommend repair when the issue is purely a loose wire or connector, which accounts for about 10 percent of the access control calls we run. If we can fix it in under an hour, we will, and we’ll tell you before doing the work.
A standard keypad or reader replacement takes 30 to 45 minutes. A full access control installation with new wiring runs two to three hours. We’ll give you an arrival window when you call, and a written price before any work begins.
Yes. Our Jacksonville trucks carry current-generation BFT keypads, card readers, intercom call stations, and the older receiver modules for pre-2017 operators. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls so when a mixed-brand property needs multiple components, it’s done in one visit. If your particular part isn’t on the truck, we’ll have it from our supply network the next business day and you’ll know the cost before we order.
