Linear gate motor replacement in Jacksonville typically runs $850 to $1,400 installed, depending on your operator model and whether the arm, control board, or full motor unit failed. We stock Linear-compatible replacement motors and aftermarket equivalents on our trucks, so most swaps happen the same day we diagnose the problem. The way most Jacksonville homeowners discover the motor has failed is simple: the gate starts slow, then stops mid-travel, then only hums. By the time it won’t move at all, the motor windings or the capacitor are usually gone.

Linear operators are common across Jacksonville, from swing gates in Ortega to slide gates on commercial lots near Philips Highway. The good news is these systems are well-documented and repairable. The bad news is Florida humidity and salt air do not treat gate motors kindly, and we see component-level failures that a dry-climate technician would never encounter.
Which Linear Models This Applies To
We replace motors across the Linear lineup: the LDO series (LDO50, LDO75), the LS050 and LS075 swing operators, the SL series slide operators, and the older APeX and MegaCode-era units still working in Jacksonville neighborhoods. The motor itself lives inside the operator housing. On the LDO50, it’s a 1/2 HP unit driving a worm gear. On the SL slide operators, you’re looking at a heavier 1/2 to 1 HP motor built for continuous duty on longer gates.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners miss: Linear changed motor mounting patterns between production years. A motor built for a 2012 LS050 will not bolt into a 2019 housing without an adapter plate, and the capacitor ratings differ by series. We match by the data plate on the operator, not by “it looks the same.” The plate lists the model, the date code, and the motor specifications. Snap a clear photo of it before you call anyone, including us. It saves a second trip.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question for Linear specifically: Linear’s OEM motors are solid, but their pricing runs higher than what the aftermarket offers for motors made to the same spec. We carry both. For most Jacksonville residential gates, a quality aftermarket motor with the same RPM, horsepower, and capacitor rating performs identically and costs $120 to $180 less. For commercial slide operators that cycle hundreds of times a day at a school or apartment complex off Baymeadows Road, we recommend OEM or a premium-duty aftermarket unit. That’s a longevity decision, not an upsell.
Independent note: Carver Gate Repair Jacksonville is an independent gate service company. We are not affiliated with Linear, Nortek, or Nice. We simply stock their parts and know their systems.

Signs Your Linear Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
- Motor hums but gate doesn’t move. The start capacitor has failed or the motor windings are burned. A failed capacitor is a $30 to $60 part. A burned motor means replacement. We test both before quoting anything.
- Gate opens slower than it did six months ago. Motor windings are degrading or the internal gears are wearing. On Linear swing operators, the worm gear wears first and puts extra load on the motor. Ignore it and the motor follows the gear into failure.
- Gate stops mid-cycle and won’t restart until it cools. This is thermal overload. The motor is overheating, usually because a worn gear or a dragging wheel is making it work harder than it should. It’s a warning, not a one-time glitch.
- Burning smell near the operator housing. Motor windings are overheating. Turn the breaker off. Jacksonville humidity accelerates corrosion on exposed motor leads, and a corroded connection generates heat before it fails completely.
- Gate jerks or shudders during travel. The motor is fighting resistance somewhere along the track or hinge line. On slide gates, we often find the chain has stretched. On swing gates, a sagging hinge lifts the gate leaf and loads the motor unevenly. Left unchecked, the motor pays the price.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
| Scope | Jacksonville Price Range |
|---|---|
| Motor only (swing operator, residential) | $450 – $700 installed |
| Motor only (slide operator, residential) | $550 – $850 installed |
| Motor + control board | $850 – $1,250 installed |
| Full operator replacement (motor, board, arm) | $1,200 – $1,800 installed |
Every replacement includes the part, the labor to remove the old motor and install the new one, re-tensioning of the chain or arm, limit switch adjustment, and a full cycle test. We write the price before any work begins. The number on the quote is the number you pay. We don’t discover a surprise after the housing is open.
Every motor replacement we install carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If that motor, our wiring, or our adjustment fails inside a year, we come back and fix it free. That’s not a verbal promise. It’s on the invoice.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. You can safely check three things: the breaker, the manual release, and whether the gate itself moves freely by hand. If the gate is stiff or binding, the problem may be mechanical, not the motor, and we’d rather find that before you spend money on a part. Those checks cost nothing.
What you should not do is open the operator housing and swap a Linear motor yourself. These motors tie into 120V or 240V circuits, and on swing operators the motor drives an arm under tension. A wrong capacitor spec or a loose ground in Florida humidity can damage the new motor the first time it cycles, and 120V through a damp housing is not a lesson worth learning twice. If the gate doesn’t cycle right, the job isn’t done. Call (904) 490-8559 and we’ll diagnose it on site, with the replacement motor on the truck if it’s needed.
FAQs
Plan on 8 to 12 years for a residential Linear operator in Jacksonville’s climate. Salt air near the beaches and humidity inland both shorten that window compared to dry parts of the country. Gates that cycle more than 10 times a day, or motors exposed to direct sun without shade, land on the shorter end of that range.
Sometimes. A failed capacitor, a corroded terminal, or a loose internal connection can be repaired for under $100 in parts. A motor with burned windings or a seized bearing cannot be economically rebuilt. We open the housing and test before recommending replacement, and we’ll show you what we found.
Most residential swaps run 60 to 90 minutes once the motor is on hand. Slide operators take longer, usually two hours, because the chain and limit switches need re-setting after the new motor goes in. If we diagnose in the morning and the motor is on the truck, your gate is cycling by afternoon.
Yes. Our trucks carry motors for the LDO50, LDO75, LS050, LS075, and SL series, plus control boards, capacitors, and remotes. For older or less common Linear units, we can usually have the correct motor in hand within one to two business days. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems, so if your gate is a mixed-brand setup we can likely address it in one visit.
If your Linear operator is showing any of the signs above, call (904) 490-8559. We’ll get a real person on the line, schedule a time that works for you, and send a background-checked, uniformed technician with the parts to fix it. You’ll get a written price before we turn a single screw. That’s how Lonnie Burke runs every job in Jacksonville, and it’s the only way we work.
