Get your free estimateViking Gate Motor Replacement: The Jacksonville Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Viking-compatible gate motors and parts across Jacksonville, with most replacements running $650 to $1,400 installed depending on the model and what’s reusable from your existing setup. We keep common Viking components on the truck, so a motor swap is often a same-visit job once we diagnose the failure. Most owners figure out the motor’s gone when the gate starts fighting them: it buzzes but won’t move, opens a foot and stops, or just sits dead after a hard rain. You’re not imagining it. Jacksonville humidity and salt air, especially east of Southside toward the beaches, take years off gate electronics.

Which Viking Models This Applies To
Viking makes a handful of operator lines, and the motor replacement path depends on which one you have. The common residential models we see in Jacksonville driveways are the Viking E-Series and G-Series swing operators, along with the R-Series and I-Series slide operators on heavier gates. Your model number is on a metal tag riveted to the operator body or the inside of the control box cover. Write that down before you call anyone. The motor itself isn’t a universal drop-in: a G-5 takes a different armature and gear set than an E-2, and the mounting bolt pattern differs between series. That’s the compatibility gotcha. Viking doesn’t sell every internal component separately anymore, which pushes many owners toward a full operator head replacement rather than just the motor core. We install OEM Viking heads when the budget allows, and we also carry quality aftermarket equivalents that match the mounting footprint and torque spec for the models most common in Jacksonville. We’ll tell you the difference in cost and what each option gives you before any money changes hands.

Signs Your Viking Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
- Humming with no movement. The motor’s getting power but can’t turn the gear train. Usually it’s a seized gear or a failed start capacitor. It’ll burn out the winding if you let it keep trying.
- Opens a few inches, then reverses or stops. The motor’s drawing too much current and the control board’s tripping the obstruction sensor. Sometimes it’s a bad limit switch; often it’s the motor’s internal brake dragging.
- Works after you push the gate manually, then won’t restart on its own. The motor’s lost starting torque. It doesn’t have enough left to move the gate from a dead stop, especially when Jacksonville’s summer heat has the hinges swollen tight.
- Burning smell near the operator housing. The winding insulation is breaking down. That’s the end stage. Don’t keep cycling the gate to “test” it – that’s how a motor fire starts.
- Intermittent dead spot. The gate stops at the same spot in its travel every time, then works again after a minute. The commutator brushes are worn to nubs. It’ll get worse until the motor won’t start at all.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For Jacksonville homes, a Viking gate motor replacement typically lands between $650 and $1,400 installed. The spread comes down to three things: which operator series you have, whether we’re replacing just the motor core or the full operator head, and whether we’re reusing your existing control board, receiver, and arm. A G-Series swing motor on a standard driveway gate usually runs $650 to $900. A heavy slide operator with a new head and limit assembly runs $1,000 to $1,400. Every one of those numbers includes the part, labor, and our written one-year guarantee. We give you the price before the work starts. Not a range we’ll tighten later, not an estimate that grows once the gate’s open. The number we write down is the number you pay. That’s the Garrison Standard, and it’s been that way since 2008.
DIY or Call Us?
The motor itself isn’t like a garage door spring; it won’t take your hand off if you unbolt it. But it’s still 120-volt wiring inside the control box, and a wrong connection can fry the new motor or the board the moment power hits it. We’ve had Jacksonville customers bring in a motor they swapped themselves and ask us to figure out why the gate runs backward or won’t auto-close. By that point they’ve usually spent the money twice. What you can safely do: check the breaker feeding the gate, make sure the manual release isn’t tripped, and check for a tripped GFCI at the outlet. If the tag says Viking and the symptom says motor, you’re better off calling (904) 490-8559. We’ll tell you over the phone what we think it is, and what it’ll cost to know for sure.
FAQs
Most Viking residential gate motors in Jacksonville last 5 to 8 years, depending on how close you are to salt air and how often the gate cycles. A motor on a busy subdivision entrance might give you 5. A residential driveway gate in Mandarin that cycles twenty times a day might run 8 or more. If you’re past year 7 and the motor’s acting up, replacement usually costs less than throwing parts at it. Call (904) 490-8559 and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s worth repairing.

Sometimes, if the failure is in the capacitor or the limit switch rather than the motor windings or the gearbox. We open the housing and test before we recommend anything. If the winding’s burned or the gear train’s stripped, repairing it is throwing good money at a dead motor. The answer comes from the test results, not from what we’d rather sell you.
Once we confirm the model and have the part in hand, most residential Viking motor swaps take 90 minutes to 2 hours on site. That includes testing the gate’s travel limits and force settings, cycling the gate several times to verify it opens and closes clean, and cleaning up the work area. If we’re replacing the full operator head, add an hour. Lonnie Burke won’t close the job until the gate cycles clean three times in a row. If the gate doesn’t cycle right, the job isn’t done.
Yes. We carry replacement motors and full operator heads for the most common Viking E-Series, G-Series, R-Series, and I-Series units, along with parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems on the same truck. If you’ve got an older Viking model, we can typically source the right part within one to two business days and schedule the install immediately after. Call (904) 490-8559 with your model number and we’ll tell you what’s on the truck today.
